Hieroglyphics
Hieroglyphs were a formal writing system used by the ancient Egyptians that combined logographic and alphabetic elements. Egyptians used cursive hieroglyphs for religious literature on papyrus and wood. Less formal variations of the script, called hieratic and demotic, are technically not hieroglyphs.
Symbol
something that represents or stands for something else, usually by convention or association, esp a material object used to represent something abstract
an object, person, idea, etc, used in a literary work, film, etc, to stand for or suggest something else with which it is associated either explicitly or in some more subtle way
a letter, figure, or sign used in mathematics, science, music, etc to represent a quantity, phenomenon, operation, function, etc
Icon
An icon is a small graphical representation of a program or file that, when clicked on, will be run or opened. Icons are used with Graphical User Interface (GUI) Operating Systems, such as Microsoft Windows and the Apple Mac OS, to help quickly identify a type of file or program associated with the icon. The image to the right is an example of what the My Computer icons in Microsoft Windows looks like.
When you double-click or open an icon, the associated file or program will be opened. For example, if you were to double-click on the My Computer icon, it would open Windows Explorer and double-clicking a document or file icon would open that document in the associated program.
Pictograph
A pictograph also known as pictogram is a symbol of the pictorial graphic system. It is a prehistoric drawing on ancient rocks and is essentially a picture of the objects they signify while an ideogram is a symbol that represents a concept or idea. A Pictograph conveys meaning through a diagrammatic representation of a physical object. Pictographs are generally used in graphic systems and writings which have characters that appear in a pictorial form. Pictography refers to a form of writing consisting of pictorial drawings and forms a base for cuneiform and even hieroglyphic writing which sometimes makes use of drawings to represent phonetic letters.

Week 4
Graphic Design in 19th century
In my research i find out the 19th century is advertising boom and the typefaces that were created in this century.
I came across this interesting part of the history of type whilst researching the Rockwell typeface. I started to look at inspiration and similar typefaces and came across Clarendon a popular typeface created in middle of 19th century.
Looking for examples of design that used this typeface to get a personal understanding of its applications. I came across a illustration of the bill posters, pasted on top of each-other, fighting for a position to grab the public attention.
Week 7
Neoclassicism
Neoclassicism is the name given to Western movements in the decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture that draw inspiration from the "classical" art and culture of Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome. The main Neoclassical movement coincided with the 18th century Age of Enlightenment, and continued into the early 19th century, latterly competing with Romanticism. In architecture, the style continued throughout the 19th, 20th and up to the 21st century.
Art Nouveau Interior design
Art Nouveau is an international philosophy and style of art, architecture and applied art – especially the decorative arts – that was most popular during 1890–1910.
Art Nouveau is considered a "total" art style, embracing architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts
Although Art Nouveau was replaced by 20th-century Modernist styles,it is now considered as an important transition between the eclectic historic revival styles of the 19th-century and Modernism.

Roman Art
Roman art refers to the visual arts made in Ancient Rome and in the territories of the Roman Empire. Roman art includes architecture, painting, sculpture and mosaic work. Luxury objects in metal-work, gem engraving, ivory carvings, and glass, are sometimes considered in modern terms to be minor forms of Roman art, although this would not necessarily have been the case for contemporaries. Sculpture was perhaps considered as the highest form of art by Romans, but figure painting was also very highly regarded. The two forms have had very contrasting rates of survival, with a very large body of sculpture surviving from about the 1st century BC onwards, though very little from before, but very little painting at all remains, and probably nothing that a contemporary would have considered to be of the highest quality. Ancient Roman pottery was not a luxury product, but a vast production of "fine wares" in terra sigillata were decorated with reliefs that reflected the latest taste, and provided a large group in society with stylish objects at what was evidently an affordable price. Roman coins were an important means of propaganda, and have survived in enormous numbers. Other perishable forms of art have not survived at all.
